Antarctic Fox
The log of Rachel and Kevin Fox's trip to the Antarctic Peninsula in the Summer of 2008-9
Day 5: Mouth of The Gullet
December 30 - Just North of The Gullet, the Antarctic Peninsula

After warming up in the sauna from our polar plunge, we freed the ship from the ice floe we'd grounded upon (is it still called grounding when it's a 10 mile wide table of drifting sea ice you've attached yourself to?) and ventured southward (ever southward).

The ice was remarkably broken up for this far south and this early in the Summer, and the daily satellite ice charts showed that a transit through The Gullet might be possible, but that would wait for another day. Today we would sail closer to the narrow constriction of the Gullet and stare in wonder at the completely placid conditions and clear skies that are such a rarity in these parts.

Leaving Behind a Smile

Leaving Behind a Smile - The ice flow we did our polar plunge from looks rather alone but happy as we leave it with a smile that some of the crew made in the snow. You can see the heavily trod path to the edge where the ladder used to be for the plunge. - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox

Beautiful Backdrop

Beautiful Backdrop - Another photo of Kevin and I in Antarctica. I really can't tell if this is one that we took holding out the camera or if Rob took this one for us. I think Rob took it, but both happened in this time and I'm not sure which one we picked. I'm going to go ahead and credit Rob with this masterpiece!!! Thank you Rob!!! - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox

Reflective Calm

Reflective Calm - Another tunnel vision photo created by using a DX wide angle lens on a full frame D700 camera. I love the reflection of the sun in the water and the calm of the scenery. - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox

Blowfish

Blowfish - This is the skin of a blowfish that our captain, Martin bought from a fisherman on an island somewhere. Such a beautiful centerpiece for dinner. I'm glad that blowfish was not on the menu though. - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox
