Day 4: Vernadsky Sunset
December 29 - Galindez Island, the Antarctic Peninsula

Just 90 miles shy of the Antarctic Circle the Sun still sets, but not until 2am, and it makes quite a production of the whole affair like a petulant child who refuses to go to sleep. As we were partied at Vernadsky the Sun sliced a long wide arc toward the distant mountains to the west, the sky growing more golden all the while.

By the time we left Vernadsky for the ship it was close to midnight and the sea was liquid honey. Without further words to get in the way, this is an Antarctic midnight:

We Have Returned

We Have Returned - Returning from Vernardsky station many of us are very "happy" from homemade glacial vodka, myself included. I'm actually surprised I pulled off such steady photos after at least 4 shots. Sara here is VERY happy. Just keep her in the boat guys! - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox

Barrel of Sunset

Barrel of Sunset - This is sunset at 11:48pm in Antarctica. Our 12 - 24mm lens is a DX lens, here I used it on our D700 which has the full frame sensor, which basically just means that the lens blacks out the areas that it can't pick up data through the lens and I get this almost fish eye like look. In this one some of the light actually leaked into the barrel giving an interesting look. - Photo by Rachel Lea Fox

We slept well, and the next day we would try to crack the Antarctic Circle and navigate The Gullet, a narrow Southern passage usually choked with sea ice.
